Junk Lovin...

I am back and ready for some more Junk Lovin...
*squeals with anticipation*

I was out walking around my new neighbourhood, as you do when you move house and need to get aquatinted with your new surroundings. I happened upon a garage sale with lots of wonderful treasures. I picked a few things for the kids room including a wooden clothes rack, some jelly moulds, glass containers (for chopped garlic and ginger as plastic is no good)... AND...

... A Singer Sewing Machine Button Hole Attachment...

I spotted the box in an area which looked like items were not for sale. I assumed it must have been an empty box. A lady saw me reading the box and asked if I wanted to have a look and I replied "Yes please!!!"
Like a kid in a candy store.

This was inside the box.
I have no idea how it works.
It is in perfect condition except for the dust.
I am not sure if it will attach to my Grandmothers Singer sewing machine. Lucky it came with instructions.
I am pretty sure there is a secret button which reveals a nail file, swiss army knife style.
I paid $2...

Do you have some junk you would like to share?

Recipe Tag... Chicken Soup.

Firstly, I need to apologise to Ally for taking a WHOLE MONTH to post my recipe. I had all the best intentions to blog this back when I was tagged but then everything got lost and misplaced in my mind and before I knew it I had forgotten all about it.
Thank You for being patient and wonderful.

Ally was after some recipe inspirations so has put the call out for all recipes that we know off the top of our heads.

So here it is...

Our easy peasy recipe which requires no written recipe

...CARLOS' FAMOUS CHICKEN SOUP...

Ally implied that I was able to hide vegies really well in her post.
In actual fact most of you should know I don't cook. I prepare and Carlos is the master chef in our house. He hides vegies in plain sight so the kids are used to seeing vegies. They are encouraged to try them at least. I am happy to announce that all 3 MooBear's eat their vegies happily without too much fuss!!

So what goes into our chicken soup.

2 carrots sliced
2 celery sticks sliced
2 potatoes peeled and cut
1 onion quartered
2 tomatoes quartered
1 parsnip cut
1 other vegetable I can't remember the name of... lol ... I remember.. It's a turnip also cut.
chopped garlic and chopped ginger
salt and pepper
massel's vegie stock cube
Oh, of course chicken drumsticks. We use 12.
Lastly... LOVE...

Method...

1. Boil chicken drumsticks, onion, tomato, ginger, garlic, vegie stock cube, salt and pepper in a pot of water until the chicken is cooked.
2. Remove drumsticks and add the vegies to the pot.
3. Take the chicken off the bone and place the meat back in the pot.
4. Leave to boil until the carrots are super soft.

That's it!!

We had chicken soup last night as it was a little chilly and we were all a little sniffly. The key to our medicinal chicken soup is ginger and garlic mixed in with the right amount of love.

So I need to tag some friends out there in blog land. I am going to choose some people I haven't tag in a meme before...

1. Em

Girls I have chosen you because you all inspire my creative mind and I know you can all sew... But I wander if you all can cook?! Hmmm??

Don't forget to link back to Ally's post where this all started. I can't wait to see what you like to eat in your homes.

Happy Wedding Anniversary...

It's our 5 year wedding anniversary today.

Carlos and I were married in Elkington Park, Balmain with 40 friends and family in attendance.

This was our little family back then.
Moo just turned 4 years old.

Moo's satin top ties in perfectly with my satin slip dress and sequinned top.
She is sooooooo tiny.

We decided rather than having a photographer we would have our friends bring along their own digital cameras to capture the day through their eyes.

These are just a handful of some of the beautiful and funny moments which were captured by our friends.

This is by far our favourite photo from all the ones taken by our friends.
It sums up everything our wedding was...

...FUN...

We did it completely our way and wouldn't change a single thing about the day at all!!

In the evening we had a game of hacky sack using a volley ball, drank champaign and watched the sun disappear.
Yes I wore my wedding dress during the game.

ps. Last year Carlos and I both forgot our wedding anniversary because we were crazy getting MooBear ready for launch... So hopefully we can make up for it this year!!

Lilly & Me Hair Clip Swap...

My friend Laura from Lily & me is having a hair clip swap.

After I did the Foxs Lane Pin Cushion Swap, which was my first blog swap ever I thought yep I want to do that again and this is my opportunity!! There is something in my heart that flutters when I can make something special for someone. It doesn't matter who they are. I just like the fluttering feeling.

I haven't made hair clips before but I am always up for a new challenge.

Check out Laura's blog and sigh up to be part of the swap, but hurry…. it ends soon.

The date has been extended to 31st of May to register. So we will receive our clips mid June.

I am totally in...

I Sent And Received My Pin Cushion...

Thank You Hannah (Chicken Willow) for my custom made, one of a kind, made from scraps... Drum roll please..
Chicken and egg pin cushion set.

My request was short and simple... I Would love anything purple or up cycled from scraps.
Hannah hit the nail on the head and everything about my pin cushions is special, right down to the hand painted gift wrapping by her children.

Which came first the chicken or the egg?

In this case Hannah made the chicken first using felt scraps from her children's craft box, calico and brown material and a gorgeous purple yarn sent from Ireland.

She wasn't sure if sticking pins in her was a good idea. She solved that problem and made an egg using tiny pieces of purple scraps *giggles* the hexagons are seriously tiny. Denim from a pair of favourite jeans and the egg cup is super special as it was a left over from her wedding day. Awwww.

She also used scrap fabric to fill the egg.
I am happy to report that the egg isn't too hard for the pins at all.

Dory likes chicken too.
Don't worry no chickens were harmed during this photo shoot!!

You can never have enough photo's of your new favourite pin cushions!!

This is my swap partners pin cushion which just so happens to be Hannah. You can check out the goodies I sent her over on her blog.

Do you like the pins?
Gretchen sent them to me for my project I am working on for Isis' Tea Zine.
Check out june at noon or her Etsy store.

I should thank Kate for organising such a wonderful swap.
THANK YOU KATE!!!
I hope she heard me...

Cubbyhouse Apron Giveaway...

I don't often blog about other peoples giveaways but this one is just up my ally and I can't help but share the love of up cycling, refashioning and recreating. Especially when friends in blog land are so supportive of what I do.

Em and her 'sister in craft' Tania are teaming up to create these one of a kind recycled denim aprons.
For your chance to WIN a customised children's apron head over to Chubbyhouse. Say hi for me too as I owe Em a coffee from yesterday... hehe.

You can also call past their Madeit store as they get busy sewing and refashioning all those jeans you no longer wear!!

Reflections, Pledges and Mother Earth...

It's insane just how much times goes by so quickly. I am reaching the 6 month mark when I took Isis' Ethical Clothing Pledge along with the Wardrobe Refashion Pledge.

I had already been doing both but this was a way to document and see what else I could do to cut back, lower our consumption, reduce our carbon foot print and generally look at things differently to help out Mother Earth.

So Team MooBear pledged to only wear clothing that was one or more of the following:

1. Pre-loved
2. Handmade (preferably by us)
3. Reconstructed
4. Made with ethical / environmentally friendly materials
5. Made by a company with strong ethical policy & workers' rights

I am proud that we did all this and more. During this time the kids and I have reconstructed and made so many clothes, bought solely from treasure shops, bought handmade items or dressed in our designs... YAY.

Since moving from the city it has been easier to simplify our spending habits and just be creative in general. We were able to clearly see what we could change within our lifestyle straight away and what we needed to work on.

Below is just a list and recap of some of things we did throughout the year. And not just clothing but toys, gifts, and handmade items from friends and family.

I had fun looking back at what we had done and it's nice to see that things were not made then put away never to be used. Everything gets made and used in our home!!

MOO...

1. Some seriously funky refashioning pictured above.
2. Made a neck warmer using scrap material. She also has a tutorial planned for our blog on how to make one for yourself.
3. Headbands are a favourite in our family.
4. Knitting needle jewellery was a lot of fun.
5. Joining in the SuperPops challenge was fun as we used what we already had lying around the house.

6. Brooches and pin cushions were made as well.
7. Sydney Stitches and Craft Show last year was a big Mother Daughter day and we had a ball.
8. Easter hat creations.

BEAR...

1. Bear's handmade omnitrix was a hit and pictured above the shirt I made him.
2. Ben 10 birthday party with handmade bunting, pinata, cake and activities.
3. Even boys need a headband sometimes.
4. Cars and dinosaurs are fun to make.

5. Up cycled pillow case into truck pillow and matching sleep shorts. I am proud to say he still sleeps with the pillow we made together and his shorts.

BUBBLE...

1. Craft Schmaft has been a big influence on our family. We introduced Monstro, Wonk, Cyril and one little monster who wasn't complete without nipples.
2. Boutique Creations crocheted flower photographed above.
3. Has a one of a kind Birthday outfit refashioned from her brothers button up shirt.
4. Is dressed by handmade with love clothing.

5. Custom made hair clips and a matching top.
6. Baby booties made just for her.

On a personal note...

1. Neither Carlos or I drive which suits us. Instead we use our pram to get around or if I am feeling like it I'll use this one.
2. We handmade Christmas presents which went over quite nicely.
3. I choose to go through my last 2 pregnancy's with a firm hold of my own personally pledge.
4. Since moving I now make my own organic, fair trade or pesticide free coffee. I can't walk down to my favourite Toby's Estate coffee shop anymore.
5. We buy organic and local produce when ever possible.

So what else can our family do to make a difference in both our lifestyle and the over all planet.
One of the biggest things at the moment for me is the over use of packaging. It's only become really apparent after the kids birthdays last month. I through away so much that it broke my heart. I wanted to keep it just so I could say I reused it. I would like to focus more on handmade gifts for friends and family this year.

Another goal of ours is to get our vegie patch up and running. I do fear I have missed the season as Matt from Enviro Central said I better be really quick about it!!

Because we choose not to drive due to the impact on the environment Carlos and I have bought our bikes. All we need is the carriage on the back for Bear and Bubble. We can enjoy a family outing on our bikes, do quick dashes to the shops or go the beach. We are looking forward to our first family bike adventure so much.

Then of course there is MooBear Designs...

We have had some wonderful opportunities to work with some great up and coming companies. I won't go into detail as you can see them in our portfolio page but they include Enviro Central

But what about our own T-shirts..

Every design is hand made using recycled fabrics making each one original and unique. Our Big Kid's Tees are Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certified(free of harmful chemicals), 100% cotton, ethically made and eco-friendly.

We are very proud to offer you childrens clothing with a conscience.
We are currently working on 3 fresh new designs right in time for winter. Stay tuned for more as I think you might just get a sneak peak at what we have been working on!!

Head over to our SHOP and check out our big kids tees as well as our baby garments.

Well there you have it!! I am off to have a coffee. I just picked up a cappuccino machine from our local treasure shop... for $5 WHAT? Beats spending hundreds of dollars.
Would anyone else like one??

Traffic Stopping Dress...

You know when you set out to achieve something and when you get there it's not quite what you were expecting.

YOU JUST HAVE TO...

...AND BREATHE.

Then you discover what you were trying to achieve was still the same only it's suddenly bigger and better than what you originally thought...

So let's take a look at the evolution of my Traffic Stopping Dress...

I completed this dress which was the first time I had pulled out a pattern to make something from scratch for myself since high school. Unfortunately I missed the "Size 16" stamped on the front of the pattern. I am not a size 16.

I told Carlos to close his eyes before I showed him my efforts and once he opened them his facial expression was priceless. He could tell I was so proud to have constructed the dress from scratch even though we both knew it was too big and let's face it I looked like a clown.

I had managed to make a dress.

Now it was time to rethink and refashion my new dress into something a little more suited to my personality.

I cut off the big puffy sleeves and put 2 darts in the bust.
Re shaped the body and donned my favourite comfy jeans.

I also remembered how to tie a neck tie.
Much nicer than a bow.

My favourite part about the dress was definitely making the skirt. Usually I would just put elastic in it but this time I decided to make a waist band.

How cute does it look!!??

I ended up adding pleats evenly around the skirt adding a tie up waist band.
My thinking behind the skirt was that Moo can wear it too.

So there you have it.

I wonder if this bed sheet preferred to be hidden in a room or is happier to be worn out and about? I know which I prefer.

I went back to the treasure shop where I bought the sheets and the ladies there remembered me. They were extremely impressed with my new skirt. So impressed in fact that I was shown a special area where they do the treasure sorting and they just had a delivery of scrap materials and trimmings.

They asked if I would be interested in sorting through it... hmmm what do you think my answer was?

A Juggling Act...

Did you know I can juggle?

I totally can!!

I learnt to juggle while I was learning to play tennis. It was part of my balls skills class and was one of my favourite classes during my 15 years of playing the sport.

I can also bounce a still ball from the ground into full bounce using my racquet.
I can catch a ball lobbed into the air into a stationary position on my racquet.
I can balance my racquet on one finger, I can do a lot of things which I learnt from playing tennis.

I can juggle life... just not as well as a tennis ball or 3.

Things are changing here at MooBear HQ.
We are having to juggle things around and I am finding my tennis skills are coming in handy. The kids think it's funny that their Mum can juggle. It makes me just a little bit more awesome in their eyes!!

Priorities are shifting both with family and our business.

We are working on new designs and products for MooBear Designs.
Carlos is building upon Analog Transmission.
We are in the process of launching Over It!
Carlos is returning to study his Bachelor of Arts.
Bubble and Bear are demanding more attention during the day as they get older.
Moo is growing into a beautiful young lady before our eyes.

This is just to name a few of the changes in our house hold and everyday life. I wont be able to blog as regularly as I do but that doesn't mean we are doing less of what we normally do. I'll still be calling past my regular blogs too.

Our blog will also be undergoing a make over. We have added an About MooBear Designs page, Up-Cycling Tutorial page and Portfolio page so far. We need to do a belated spring clean of our side bars and tidy up some loose ends.

We will still be refashioning, crafting, recreating, treasure hunting, dancing, singing and even have a family day planned just like our KISS day.

...In amongst all of this MooBear Designs will also be turning 1 year old on the 1st May.

We have some special things in store for our blog followers so stay tuned to this channel.
